Kovalev knocked Agnew down in the second and sixth rounds, and the referee waved the fight off after Agnew was cut over the left eye.

The victory extends Kovalev's unbeaten record to 35-0-1, and he now has 29 knockouts to his name.

Agnew, who was fighting for a world title for the first time, drops to 12-5-1.

Kovalev said after the fight: "I'm very happy to win this fight. Agnew is a tough opponent, but I was too strong for him tonight.

"I'm now looking forward to my next fight. I want to unify the cruiserweight division and become the undisputed champion."

Agnew said: "I'm disappointed to lose, but Kovalev is a great champion. He was too strong for me tonight.

"I'll learn from this experience and come back stronger."

The victory was Kovalev's first since his controversial draw with Eleider Alvarez in August.

It was also his first fight under new trainer Buddy McGirt.

Kovalev is now expected to face mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde next.

Yarde is the WBO's No. 1-ranked cruiserweight and is undefeated in 20 fights with 19 knockouts.
