Hydrothermal Explosion Closes Area in Yellowstone National Park
Park Officials Urge Caution Following Tuesday Morning Eruption
Biscuit Basin Area Remains Closed Until Further Notice
A hydrothermal explosion sent a towering column of boiling water, mud, and rock shooting into the air Tuesday morning at Yellowstone National Park. Visitors were left running for safety as the eruption occurred in the Biscuit Basin area, just north of Old Faithful.
Park officials have closed the Biscuit Basin area until further notice. They are urging visitors to stay away from the area until it is deemed safe. Hydrothermal explosions are relatively common in Yellowstone, but this particular eruption was larger than normal.
No one was injured in the eruption, but some visitors were reportedly shaken up by the experience. A park ranger was on the scene and is assisting with the investigation. The cause of the eruption is still unknown.
Yellowstone National Park is home to a number of geysers, hot springs, and other hydrothermal features. The park is a popular tourist destination, and visitors who come to see the natural beauty are often surprised by the power of the hydrothermal activity.
