Betelgeuse 2: Everything You Need to Know
Pre-production Delayed
Director Tim Burton's planned sequel to Beetlejuice, titled Beetlejuice 2, has had its pre-production indefinitely postponed because of complications tied to the film's script, A-list actors' busy schedules, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has slowed production down.
What We Know So Far
In 2015, plans for a Beetlejuice sequel were first announced. Michael Keaton was reported to reprise his role as the "bio-exorcist" Betelgeuse, and Winona Ryder and Geena Davis were reportedly in talks to return. However, Burton later said that the script was not yet ready and that the film was not a sure thing.
In 2019, it was announced that the film was back in development, with Seth Grahame-Smith writing the script. Grahame-Smith is best known for writing the novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which was adapted into a film in 2012.
In 2020, it was reported that Keaton, Ryder, and Davis were all set to return for the sequel, which was expected to begin filming in 2021. However, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed those plans.
What's Next?
It is unclear when Beetlejuice 2 will begin production. Burton is currently working on another film, The Addams Family 2, which is set for release in 2021.
Once Beetlejuice 2 does begin filming, it is likely to be released in 2023 or 2024.
